Now, when my Hindi is striving to rich the basic level, I start teaching my office colleagues Romanian!!
We have daily classes and we teach each other our native languages and the next day I told them the hindi version and they are saying me the Romanian version.
Till know they now to say: Salut! Pa! and Ce faci?
What to teach them tomorrow?
Week no 3: Hindi lessons no 1
In India English is an official language and everyone who has studies knows English because the classes are in English. Everywhere you go you are going to find a person who knows English and even the simple persons who don’t have education can understand and talk a Basic English because almost everything is written also in English. So if you know English you are going to manage very well.
But… of course there is a but, this is India, no?
If you know Hindi your life is much easier. If you know at least a basic Hindi your life style is increasing a lot. Why?
- Because rickshaws drivers don’t know English and sometimes you need to communicate with them
- Because taxi drivers don’t know English
- Because you can ask direction
- Because you can go alone to every shop
- Because you are going to be able to read the bus route and number that is written in front, it will not be necessary to wait for the bus to stop to see the English version, and when all this is happening, all the people will be inside the bus and the buss will be leaving and you… waiting in the bus station for a new one
- Because you are going to understand what is going on around you, what the others are saying. Even if they know English people don’t talk with each other in English they are talking in Hindi.
- Because you are going to be able to read
This is valid for every country. Knowing a basic of the local language is increasing your life style.
It took me 3 days to realize that the numbers of the busses are written in Hindi. I just cannot believe that Hindi language has special characters for number because usually either if the alphabet is different the numbers are Roman. This is another rule that India broke me.
So, Yesterday I start learning Hindi. It is a very special language. For now I know only the number of the busses what I have to bring to go to work and to come back and the name of the station at which I have to look on.
After a great experience with a rickshaw driver last week (he was so nice to show me the city instead to bring me to the office) that took me 130 rupees and almost one hour and a half I start learning some basic words in Hindi, like: ha = yes, nehii = no, baia = left, daia = right, sida = straight ahead, bas = stop(special for them), ceai = tea, panii = apa. And that’s all.
By the end of this week I have to learn the numbers and some other basic words.
