Romania – the land of gypsies
In AIESEC we always talk about cultural sensitivity, indiscrimination, and equality between human being. And we take care that our EPs are not discriminating and they will be good ambassadors of Romania. Yeah, a lot of interviews, a lot of trainings, a lot of preparation, for what? Does it really matters?
I never feel this feeling that I’m ambassador of my country wherever I go. Till now I felt like a Romanian in other part of the world. I never thought that those around me see in me Romania, and for them Romania is like I am.
Today at world café a TCSer, Indian, tell me that he heard about Romania – he read that Romania is the land of gypsies. Yes! Romania – land of gypsies. I was shocked too! This is the worst thing that I ever heard about Romania!
The reality overcomes the theoretical questions that we put on the interview!
Are you curious what did I say?
Yes, it’s true. We have gypsies; we have a gypsy’s community like a lot of countries, but they are too few to characterize us. And after that I related with India, and about how bad and different looks India from home and what is the reality here.
For the first time in my life I’m feeling responsible about what is happening with country. I’m feeling responsible about the image that people have about Romania. Romanian is a wonderful country with wonderful places visit, interesting histories to know.
I never thought I will need to know so many things about my country, about Romania’s history. I always I thought it is useless, why to know about Romania? Knowing about my area is enough. Yes, it is enough when you live only in our place, it is enough when the Romanian’s borders limit you, but when you live in a such a different world, surrounded by people from all the continents, more than 20 nationalities, the things change. They ask you what’s the difference between orthodox and Catholics is. I never thought too much on this, 95% of Romanians are Orthodox. They ask you how the Romanian language was formed. How come it is a Latin language when all the countries that surround it are Slavic? (No I’m not going to tell you the answer, but I will give you a link when you can find a lot of answers about Romania. Yes, I read it before leaving home).
Coffey, a Chinese trainee in Mumbai is going to Sibiu in summer (Romanian summer). That city is amazing!! I want to go there too!! Everything that is that city has a history!
After seeing all this wonderful miracles that Romania has, do you think they will believe when someone will say that Romania is the land of gypsies?
